A rare museum-quality tea-ceremony basket in remarkable antique condition by the legendary 1st Generation Hayakawa Shokosai l, (1815-1897) during the late Edo and early Meiji periods, Shokosai I is recognized as a master pioneer of Japanese bamboo arts and was historically the first bamboo artist to formally sign his work.
Hayakawa Shokosai I is important to Japanese bamboo art because through the excellence and originality of his work, expression of a personal style, and development of a uniquely Japanese aesthetic of bamboo work, he established the field as one where a basket made by a Japanese creator could be understood as art.
