The inscription at the top identifies the figure as the 4th Caesar.

This painting is inspired by the series of 11 portraits of Roman Emperors painted by Titian for the Duke of Gonzaga between 1539 and 1561, now lost.

In 1561, Bernardino Campi made a copy of Titian's paintings, and subsequently drew heavily on Titian's style to create his own series of 12 Emperors.

He thus contributed to the spread of this style of portraiture, which still adorns palaces in Italy and private studies today.
