This impressive antique French buffet deux corps was crafted in Normandy circa 1780 and exemplifies the elegant provincial interpretation of the Louis XV style. Built in solid pine, the two-part cabinet combines graceful movement with abundant hand-carved ornamentation, showcasing the craftsmanship and regional character for which Norman furniture is celebrated.
The upper vitrine is crowned with a shaped bonnet featuring carved scrolls and a richly detailed central crest decorated with birds, grapes, floral bouquets, and a woven basket motif. Two glazed doors with shaped moldings open to reveal two interior shaped shelves designed for the display of faience, porcelain, glassware, or treasured collections. Delicate carved floral garlands and foliate motifs embellish the façade throughout, while the original brass escutcheons and hardware add authenticity and charm. The upper display section has been fitted with interior lighting controlled by a convenient on/off switch, allowing collections to be beautifully illuminated.
The lower cabinet is fitted with two paneled doors framed by deeply molded surrounds and accented with carved floral decoration. Inside, the case offers generous storage and retains an interior pull-out drawer. A distinctive carved star medallion centered on the shaped apron adds a unique decorative element rarely encountered on provincial Norman furniture. The cabinet stands on elegant Louis XV feet and retains wonderful proportions that provide both visual lightness and practical functionality.
Throughout, the pine exhibits beautiful grain patterns and a warm honey-colored patina developed over centuries of use. Rich hand-carved details, original character marks, and subtle wear consistent with age contribute to the authenticity and appeal of this important antique Normandy buffet deux corps. A striking statement piece for a dining room, kitchen, library, or country estate interior.
