In 1910, French printers created color lithographs using a multi-stone process called chromolithography. Instead of coloring a single image, master printers used a unique, heavy block of Bavarian limestone for every individual color in the final design. The process required careful mapping, layering, and patience:Color Separation: The printer analyzed the original artwork to break it down into its base colors (e.g., yellow, red, blue, and black for shading).Stone Drawing: A master lithographer drew the exact areas destined for a specific color onto a distinct block of limestone, using a greasy, wax-like crayon or tusche (liquid ink).Etching: The stone was treated with an acid and gum arabic mixture to etch the non-image areas, ensuring they would absorb water but repel oil-based ink.Layered Printing: The paper was fed through the press multiple times. It was laid down on the first stone (e.g., yellow) and then run through again on the second (e.g., red), third (e.g., blue), and subsequent stones, with inks applied one layer at a time.
