The artist of this engraving is Charles William Dahlgreen (American, 1864–1955).
While the cursive script can easily look like "John W. Dahlgren", it actually reads Charles W. Dahlgreen. Below the signature, the text reads "Smithsonian Institution Edition". In 1945, Dahlgreen presented his life's work of copper plates to the Smithsonian Institution. The institution published a special catalogue and a limited commemorative edition of etchings and drypoints from those plates in 1946. Pieces from this edition are part of prominent collections like the National Gallery of Art.
