Japan, Meiji Period, Circa 1880
Diameter: 12 inches
This striking and highly unusual Japanese cloisonne charger represents a sophisticated departure from the more commonly encountered floral and landscape decorated examples of the Meiji period. Executed with extraordinary precision, the design is centered around a spirited golden shishi, or mythical lion, surrounded by scrolling foliage and blossoms set against a rich black ground. The lively central medallion is framed by a series of boldly curved reserves rendered in contrasting colors and intricate geometric patterns, creating a remarkably modern and visually dynamic composition.
What makes this charger particularly impressive is the extraordinary quality and density of the wire work. Every section of the design is painstakingly constructed from countless individual cloisonne wires, forming an array of geometric motifs that cover nearly the entire surface. The turquoise, yellow, violet, and olive-toned reserves are filled with intricate repeating patterns that required an immense amount of labor to execute. Such elaborate wire work is a testament to the technical mastery achieved by Japanese enamellists during the early Meiji period, when workshops competed to demonstrate the highest levels of craftsmanship for both domestic and international audiences.
The central shishi is beautifully animated, appearing to leap through a garden of stylized flowers and scrolling vines. Traditionally regarded as a symbol of protection, strength, and good fortune, the shishi motif adds both visual energy and cultural significance to the composition. The vivid yellow body contrasts dramatically against the black enamel ground, while the surrounding floral decoration provides a harmonious balance between movement and ornament.
Equally remarkable is the overall design concept. Rather than relying on naturalistic imagery alone, the artist has combined bold asymmetrical forms with highly disciplined geometric ornamentation, creating a charger that feels surprisingly modern despite its nineteenth century date. The interplay between the sweeping reserves and the intricate patterned surfaces demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of color, balance, and decorative design.
The enamels retain excellent color throughout, displaying rich tones of turquoise, yellow, violet, green, black, and brown. The extensive cloisonne work remains crisp and clearly defined, allowing the extraordinary complexity of the decoration to be fully appreciated. Pieces exhibiting this level of geometric wire work are considerably less common than traditional floral examples and are highly sought after by collectors who appreciate technical excellence and unusual design.
An exceptional and visually captivating example of Meiji period Japanese cloisonne, combining extraordinary craftsmanship, innovative design, and a powerful decorative presence.
