Antique Victorian Aesthetic Movement Three-Tier Bamboo Etagere or whatnot.
This late 19th-century English etagere (circa 1880s) features a handcrafted frame made of structurally sound tortoiseshell or scorched burnt bamboo poles.
The piece is built as a three-open-shelf tiered stand, originally designed for high tea, desserts and also for plates display.
This charming and quite useful piece has three square black-lacquered wooden shelves decorated with delicate, hand-painted Japanned floral motifs in a Chinoiserie style.
The frame includes an arched top transport handle and angled splayed legs for stability, capturing the Anglo & French Japonisme design influence highly sought after during the English and French Aesthetic Movement.
Very good condition, consistent with age and use.
