An original signed and hand-painted wooden Camp Shanks Fire Department Equipment Award sign, spanning the years 1944 to 1947.
Camp Shanks, located in Orangeburg, NY, was the largest World War II US Army embarkation camp on the East Coast, famously nicknamed "Last Stop USA." Millions of soldiers passed through it before deploying to Europe. This piece honors the base's internal fire department and tracks monthly efficiency or equipment designations across various fire engines (Engine 8, 9, and 10) during the height of the war effort.
