This glazing technique, traditionally known as speckled glaze, is particularly popular in Grottaglie, a small town in the province of Apulia, Italy.

The speckled glaze likely originated by accident or accident. Its exact origin remains unclear, but it probably dates back to the Middle Ages. In Grottaglie ceramics, it is primarily found on large bowls, which were also used for washing laundry, but also on storage vessels and bottles. This spraying technique, which children also practiced, was once used with twigs, especially thyme branches.
