Box dimensions: height 11 cm, width 37 cm, depth 22 cm.

These cylindrical glass floats were used in Japanese fishing, including with fishing lines and terracotta octopus pots such as takotsubo. They marked the position where the pots or lines had been lowered into the water.

The ten floats are made from thick, hand-blown glass in beautiful blue-green to grey-green tones. The glass shows small air bubbles, subtle irregularities, light scratches and gentle clouding, all typical of old utilitarian glass. Their compact cylindrical shape, rounded ends and heavy glass walls give them a very tactile, almost sculptural presence.

The old box is covered with aged brown paper and decorated with Japanese calligraphy, written markings and traces of long use. Together with the glass floats, it forms a highly atmospheric set: not only a group of maritime working objects, but also a powerful decorative piece with history and character.

Today these garasu-uki work beautifully as an interior accent: arranged in a wooden bowl, placed on a low table, displayed in a cabinet or combined with ceramics, wood and other natural materials. The combination of old glass, worn paper, calligraphy and honest patina gives the set a quiet, authentic wabi-sabi quality.

In beautiful antique/vintage condition, with normal signs of use, light scratches, air bubbles and patina consistent with age and use. The box shows visible wear, small damages and age-related traces, which add to the authenticity of the set. See less
