Striking original graphic poster dating from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, created to promote the english-language broadcast of the iconic sandokan television series by rai (radiotelevisione italiana). The celebrated series was based on the adventurous indo-malay novels written by renowned italian author emilio salgari. The poster features a highly effective and visually captivating design. Bold black silhouettes emerge dramatically, reminiscent of traditional shadow theater, set against a limited yet powerful color palette of warm camel beige and deep blood red. This minimalist composition conveys a strong sense of mystery, adventure, and exoticism while maintaining exceptional graphic elegance. The project was designed by gemma fiorentini and michela papadia, the latter honored posthumously with the 2023 awda (aiap women in design award). In this work, the two designers masterfully capture the allure of salgari’s legendary indo-malay adventure cycle, expressing its exotic atmosphere through a refined, balanced, and sophisticated visual language. A remarkable example of italian graphic design from the late twentieth century, this poster is highly decorative and collectible, appealing to enthusiasts of vintage advertising, television memorabilia, italian design, and literary-inspired artwork.
condition: the poster is in good vintage condition. Minor signs of age and use are present, consistent with its period. The black lacquered wooden frame shows light wear and small age-related marks, which do not detract from the overall presentation.
