Just to confuse you further, they were also called a Chest on Stand. The Chest on Chests originated in Colonial America during the late 1600s and soon became popular in England, where they were called “Tallboys”. There are numerous concepts why they were built this way, but since they were a split case construction they were easier to move, especially up small staircases. I have also heard that you would place your warm clothes in one half and cold weather clothes in the other half and switch when the seasons change. Typically, we would not go out and buy a Chest on Chest for inventory, however, because this Chest of Drawers, or Chest on Chest was made from magnificent Burl Walnut it became too difficult to pass and is clearly one of the nicer Chests on Chests we have had in decades. It is our opinion that this Chest on Chest was made in the 1800’s in England. The most unusual aspect was that it did not require restoration and must have lived a very sheltered life. Please look the chest over carefully, for it is not perfect, but rather enjoys a wonderful old patina and is way too nice to refinish. See less
