A compelling mid-scale devotional sculpture portraying the Lord of the Dance in his iconic cosmic circle of fire, enveloped in a deeply rich, traditional dark patina. Hand-cast via ancestral lost-wax casting methods, this 9.5-inch-tall sculpture captures one of the most celebrated and complex allegories in South Asian sacred art: Shiva Nataraja executing the Ananda Tandava, the dance of bliss that represents the continuous creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe. The central figure is poised in perfect dynamic balance on his right leg, trampling the dwarf demon of ignorance, while his left leg lifts gracefully across his body in a gesture of spiritual liberation. His multiple arms extend into the classic iconographic mudras, holding the damaru drum of creation and the agni flame of destruction.
The energy of the dance is framed by a magnificent, circular halo of living flames, or prabhamandala, which springs directly from a beautifully cast, tiered lotus base resting on a square pedestal. This particular specimen is blanketed in a deeply rich, traditional espresso-and-charcoal patina.
