About the artist:
Born in 1876 in Saint-Omer, Eugène René is the second of four children of Antoine Albert Liénard of Saint-Delis (1840-1881), officer of the 5 th regiment of dragons and his wife Antoinette Emma Houet (1847 -1920). The birth of our artist is followed by that of his brother Henri (1878-1949), also a painter . The death of the illnesses of Captain Liénard de Saint-Delis led Emma to leave the Pas-de-Calais in 1881 to move to Le Havre with her four children.
After high school François-I of Le Havre where another student, Émile Othon Friesz , is his best friend, René de Saint-Delis attended successively the Municipal School of Fine Arts of Le Havre where, with his classmates, besides his brother Henri and Othon Friesz, others who will also become his friends ( Georges Braque , Raoul Dufy , Raimond Lecourt ), he follows the courses of Charles Lhuillier (a "great admirer of Boudin " at the same time as "he places the drawing first and foremost, forbidding his pupils to use color , and the Académie Julian in Paris, where from 1900 to 1904 he was a pupil of William Bouguereau . On January 29, 1906, Le Havre created the Circle of Modern Art, which consisted of artists (among them, René and Henri de Saint-Delis, their aforementioned friends, but also Gaston Prunier ) and Le Havre collectors, will organize until 1910 exhibitions affiliated to the Salon d'Automne in Paris, as well as musical and literary events to which Frantz Jourdain , Guillaume Apollinaire or Claude Debussy will participate .
The first period in the work of René de Saint-Delis thus consists of painted navies in Le Havre before he was, escaping the front because reformed in 1910, assigned in 1915 to the 3rd territorial section of military nurses in Étretat (he is precisely secretary-accountant of the hospital 111) where he meets Jeanne Fidelin (1895-?), young native then nurse of the auxiliary hospital. The Lisieux municipal library houses a rare collective work, entitled Pages et croquis: 1914-1918, collecting texts and drawings, among which is the signature of René de Saint-Delis, making our artist a witness of the First World War. .
Between 1916 and 1919, René de Saint-Delis went to Leysin in Switzerland several times to his brother Henri, who received extensive care against tuberculosis : hence his Waldensian landscapes such as the one preserved by the Alfred-Canel Museum of Pont-Audemer. His marriage to Le Havre on June 17, 1919 with Jeanne Fidelin made him settle permanently in Étretat, rue George-V . He then paints the daily life of the fishermen, the sea from the cliffs, the orchards and pastures that constitute the countryside Cauchoise: Marie-Hélène Desjardins restores in him a temperament "modest, living retired and caring little to be known, realizing in the shadow an abundant and original work " . In the evening of his life, he turns towards still lifes.
The features of René de Saint-Delis remain fixed by the portrait of Emile Othon Friesz and that today preserves the Museum of Modern Art André Malraux Le Havre. He remains perceived as "not being without common traits with Henry, his younger brother, and the formula of Rene" never give up the contact with nature "is characteristic of both of them which, until 'at the end of their long career, will study daily on the motive' .
