The work was created in Japan between the 19th and 20th centuries (late Edo or Meiji period) and is finely decorated with a refined scene depicting aristocratic figures and children playing with spinning tops, a pastime with a thousand-year-old tradition in Asia and enjoyed by both court and commoners. In the background and to the right, dignitaries and noblewomen watch the scene inside an elaborate architectural pavilion, adorned with drapes and birdcages. At the four corners is a complex composition of medallions enclosing narrative vignettes (fishermen, dignitaries, scenes of contemplation). Decoration in black and gold lacquer (maki-e) on pressed papier mache (a traditional Asian technique used for lightweight luxury objects). See less
