An investment-grade acquisition for serious collectors of mid-century cinema ephemera and graphic arts, this is an original 1973 hand-pulled silkscreen (serigraph) movie poster produced in Havana, Cuba, by the celebrated ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos).
This magnificent avant-garde design was illustrated by the legendary Cuban graphic master Antonio Fernández Reboiro (simply known as Reboiro, b. 1935) for the island's theatrical premiere of the acclaimed 1969 Franco-Algerian drama El Opio Y El Garrote (L'Opium et le Bâton).Reboiro is widely considered one of the defining titans of the "Golden Age of the Cuban Film Poster".
His works are highly prized by collectors worldwide and have been accessioned into the permanent collections of elite museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. For this anti-colonial historical feature, Reboiro leverages a staggering, high-impact conceptual approach—deconstructing the iconic crescent moon and star of the Algerian flag and re-imagining them into a hypnotic, fractured psychedelic sunburst of emerald green, deep red, and ivory
Reflecting the authentic material shortages of 1970s Cuba, this historic poster is hand-printed using exceptionally rich, heavy oil-based inks on characteristic ultra-thin paper stock. The dense pigments have saturated the porous fibers over the decades, creating a clear, visible ink bleed-through profile on the reverse side—the definitive hallmark of a true, hand-screened vintage original
