An exceptional and highly collectible piece of graphic art ephemera, this is an original 1973 hand-pulled revolutionary political propaganda poster created in Havana, Cuba. Designed artist Navarro this striking minimalist serigraph was printed in the workshops of the ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos) to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the historic 26th of July Movement (Movimiento 26 de Julio).
Devoid of standard heavy-handed military realism, the artist utilizes a bold, mid-century graphic approach to represent the revolution. The design showcases a vibrant geometric sunburst radiating warm orange, yellow, and red rays over a dark, textured field—symbolizing a new dawn breaking over the Sierra Maestra mountains.
Cascading vertically from the sun is a repeating, stylized typographical treatment of the number "26", a direct nod to the date of the historic 1953 assault on the Moncada Barracks that catalyzed the Cuban Revolution.
True 1970s Cuban political posters from this "Golden Age" of Latin American graphic design are widely revered by art institutions worldwide for their incredible synthesis of avant-garde composition and vibrant color palettes. Signed and dated in-plate in the lower right corner as "ICAIC / ñiko 73", this historic work is hand-pulled with heavy, oil-based screenprinting inks onto characteristic delicate, thin paper stock. The dense pigments have saturated the porous paper stock over the decades, creating a visible ink bleed-through profile on the reverse side—the absolute hallmark of an authentic, early workshop 1st-edition Cuban print.
