A monumental addition for collectors of mid-century Latin American graphic arts, this is an original 1973 hand-pulled revolutionary political propaganda poster produced in Havana, Cuba. Designed by the absolute master of Cuban graphic art, Eduardo Muñoz Bachs (1937–2001), this striking minimalist serigraph was printed in the workshops of the ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos) to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 1953 Moncada Barracks assault.I
nstead of a traditional portrait, Bachs employs a masterful, organic pop-art approach. The design interprets the distinct profile, mustache, and brow of Cuban intellectual hero José Martí using fluid, layered shapes of azure, cobalt, and cyan blue set against a deep cream background. Bold typography at the base anchors the design with the historic title: "MARTI AUTOR INTELECTUAL". This is a legendary specimen of 1970s post-revolutionary graphic design that seamlessly balances conceptual fine art with political messaging.
Reflecting the historical material shortages of 1970s Cuba, this print is hand-pulled using rich, heavy oil-based screenprinting inks on characteristic ultra-thin paper stock. Over the decades, these dense pigments have saturated the fibers to create a distinct ink bleed-through profile beautifully visible from the back—serving as the undisputed hallmark of an authentic, early workshop 1st-edition Cuban print.
