Rollicking Original 1980 New Orleans Mardi Gras print by artist Robert Gordy Pop Art Black Memorabilia
ABOUT THE PRINT:
In 1979 Gordy did a watercolor and marker piece called "Study for Dipsey Doodle" which he developed into this 1980 Mardi Gras poster.
It was published in an edition of 3,000 numbered by artist Robert Gordy (also an edition of 850 numbered and signed ).
This serigraph is a 32.5" x 22" piece Numbered 1163 of the 3000 and is signed with the bulky white 'Gordy' signature which may be in print.
This is a hard-to-find numbered print, given the deep losses of irreplaceable treasures in 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina.
ProCreations has long been the pre-eminent publisher of art commemorating Mardi Gras, NOJF, Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, and other world events. This is their poster for the 1980 Mardi Gras.

ROBERT GORDY’s death in 1986 at the age of 52 was an enormous loss. Gordy possessed extraordinary compositional skills and marvelously imaginative intelligence. His elegant paintings done in his signature style through 1981 evidence a mastery, particularly over hue and value of color and keeping dynamics of shape in varied balance. Even in this austere period there were often intense emotional realities beneath his paintings’ apparent calm. Beginning in 1982 his work was clearly about more than mastery of color and design as profound emotional messages surfaced in Robert Gordy’s superb series of monotypes done at the end of his life.
