On offer is a late 19th century to the early 20th century heavily ornate Tamil Kudam, a ritual and utilitarian water vessel handcrafted from brass or bronze. The wide shoulder, tapered base, and distinct flared rim are mathematically designed to be carried comfortably resting on a person’s hip or head. Brass and bronze are natural antimicrobial materials. In Tamil households, water stored in a Kudam stays cool and undergoes a natural purification process. When filled with water, topped with a coconut and mango leaves, a Kudam transforms into a Kumbha or Kalash. It becomes a central object in Tamil Hindu religious rituals, housewarmings (Grihapravesam) and temple consecrations (Kumbhab अभिषेक / Kumbhabhishekham).
The artwork on the belly of the vessel holds deep auspicious meanings in Tamil culture. The two finely etched birds facing each other are parrots (Kili in Tamil). In Southern Indian tradition, parrots represent the vehicle of Kama (the god of love) and are deeply associated with Meenakshi, the warrior-goddess of Madurai.
Because parrots symbolize marital bliss, affection, and fertility, vessels featuring them were almost exclusively commissioned as part of a bride's Seer Varisai (wedding dowry / heirloom gifts from her parents). The parrots frame a central stylized lotus bouquet, reinforcing the theme of spiritual purity, prosperity, and a blossoming family lineage.
The upper shoulders feature concentric geometric patterns and running vine loops (Kodi patterns). These bands were hand-punched, millimeter by millimeter, using a small iron chisel and a hammer.
In South India, particularly in Tamil households, it is an age-old tradition to deeply engrave the family name or the name of a newlywed couple onto large brass and bronze dowry vessels, water pots (Kudam), or large cooking vessels. This served as a mark of ownership, commemorated a milestone event, and ensured the valuable metal heirlooms wouldn't get mixed up during large village festivals or community feasts.
The name "கா. திவானிராஜ்" (Kā. Divānīrāj) sits just to the right of this focal parrot motif, confirming it was permanently customized to mark this specific family’s ownership of an expensive, treasured heirloom. The script on this object is written in the Tamil alphabet, which is used natively in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu as well as in Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia.
The text reads: கா. (Kā.): This is an initial, typically representing a family name or the father's name. திவானிராஜ் (Divānīrāj / Diwaniraj): This is the main given name. It is a combination of "Diwani" (historically a royal or administrative title) and "Raj" (meaning king or ruler).
