The engravings originate from Bernard de Montfaucon’s celebrated work Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures, published in London in 1721, one of the most important early studies of classical antiquity and architectural history. The sheets depict an impressive range of centralized temple and church plans, domed structures, geometric architectural studies, and ornamental layouts derived from classical Roman architectural theory.
