The composition originates from the celebrated work du Manège Moderne by Friedrich Wilhelm Baron von Eisenberg, one of the most important illustrated horse manuals of the eighteenth century. The engraving combines scientific observation, aristocratic taste, and refined draftsmanship, reflecting the growing European fascination with Arabian horses and classical horsemanship during the Baroque period. Baron von Eisenberg, an aristocratic horseman and riding master active across Europe, produced some of the most sophisticated equestrian engravings of his era. Though German by birth, he worked extensively in France and England and dedicated his influential publication to the courtly riding traditions associated with Louis XIV. Published in 1727, du Manège Moderne became one of the landmark illustrated equestrian books of the eighteenth century and attracted subscriptions from hundreds of European aristocrats. The Arabian horse was admired throughout Europe for its intelligence, elegance, endurance, and refined proportions. In this engraving, Eisenberg presents the animal almost as an equine portrait, emphasizing the graceful neck, slender limbs, elevated stance, and calm temperament associated with the prized Arabian breed. The sparse mountainous landscape reinforces the exotic appeal of the subject while allowing full attention to remain on the horse itself. The engraving is finely executed in copperplate with delicate line work and subtle tonal modeling. The later hand-coloring has been tastefully applied in soft natural tones that enhance the print’s decorative quality while preserving its classical appearance. The clean composition and restrained palette make the work exceptionally versatile for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Original Eisenberg engravings are highly sought after by collectors of sporting art, equestrian history, Arabian horse imagery, and eighteenth-century decorative prints. This example displays particularly well due to its elegant simplicity and strong visual balance. This is an original 18th-century copperplate engraving from du Manège Moderne, published in 1727.
