Considered one of the earliest and most ambitious scholarly surveys of the ancient world, Montfaucon’s monumental work laid important foundations for the modern disciplines of archaeology, architectural history, and classical art studies. The engraving presents a series of architectural designs and classical interior studies inspired by the works of the Italian Renaissance architect Sebastiano Serlio, whose influence on European architecture remained profound well into the eighteenth century. The plate combines plans, elevations, domed structures, columned porticoes, ornamental interiors, and medallion devices, all rendered with remarkable precision through delicate copperplate engraving techniques. Montfaucon’s encyclopedia was produced for an educated European audience fascinated by the rediscovery and interpretation of classical antiquity. The work gathered visual material from ancient monuments, sculpture collections, engraved gems, architectural remains, and Renaissance interpretations of antiquity, creating one of the most visually important antiquarian publications of the eighteenth century. Plates such as this one were intended not only as scholarly references but also as decorative objects admired for their refined balance of geometry, perspective, and ornament. The engraving displays beautifully as both an academic architectural study and an elegant decorative print. Its restrained monochromatic palette and symmetrical compositions make it particularly suitable for classic, neoclassical, or contemporary interiors. It displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, museum black, or lightly gilt frames paired with a wide ivory or parchment-toned mat. This is an original eighteenth-century copperplate engraving printed in Paris in 1721, not a modern reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The engraving is sold unframed; any framed images shown are for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Condition: Good overall condition with age-related toning, scattered light foxing, and minor wear to the sheet edges consistent with age. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: Displays particularly well in an architectural or library setting using a dark walnut, ebonized, or museum black frame with a wide warm ivory mat to emphasize the fine engraved detail.
