Montfaucon’s monumental encyclopedic survey of classical antiquities became one of the foundational publications of archaeology and art history, documenting ancient Roman and Greek objects, sculpture, architecture, inscriptions, and decorative arts from important European collections. The engraving presents a refined collection of classical decorative objects and ornamental fragments, including mythological relief panels, ceremonial vessels, bronze utensils, decorative medallions, ancient spoons, and richly ornamented caskets. Particularly striking are the elaborate relief plaques featuring winged putti, Medusa-like masks, garlands, and classical grotesque ornamentation inspired by Roman decorative arts. The composition beautifully captures the eighteenth-century fascination with the rediscovery of antiquity and the decorative elegance of the ancient world. Executed with remarkable precision through copperplate engraving, the plate combines scholarly documentation with strong decorative appeal. The delicate linear shading and finely engraved ornament create sculptural depth and texture while preserving the clarity intended by Montfaucon’s publication. Such engravings were highly influential among collectors, artists, architects, and Grand Tour travelers during the rise of neoclassicism in Europe. Today the engraving displays exceptionally well as both an antiquarian study and a decorative artwork. The balanced arrangement of classical motifs and refined monochromatic palette make it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, offices, and interiors inspired by classical or neoclassical design. It pairs beautifully with dark walnut, museum black, or lightly gilt frames combined with wide ivory or parchment-toned mats. This is an original eighteenth-century copperplate engraving printed in London in 1721, not a modern reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The engraving is sold unframed; any framed images shown are for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Condition: Good overall condition with age-related toning, scattered foxing, and minor wear to the sheet edges consistent with age. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: Displays beautifully in dark walnut, ebonized, or museum black frames with a generous warm ivory mat to emphasize the intricate engraved ornament and classical decorative detail.
