A breathtaking abstract biomorphic studio ceramic vase signed by the artist and dated '54 — placing its creation firmly in the golden age of mid-century modernism. This is not an ordinary vase. It is a sculptural statement piece that functions equally as a vessel and as a work of art.
The Form:
The vase takes the form of a dramatically twisted, organically folded slab — curling and opening like a wave, a nautilus shell, or a calla lily in full bloom. The wide, sweeping mouth opens asymmetrically from a tightly coiled base, creating extraordinary visual movement. Viewed from every angle it reveals a completely different silhouette. It would hold a single dramatic stem — a bird of paradise, a protea, a branch — magnificently.
The Glazes:
Two surfaces, two completely different worlds. The exterior is finished in a matte, heavily speckled dark forest green — volcanic, textural, and earthy. The interior is a warm, luminous glossy ivory/cream — smooth and sensuous. As the form twists and opens, the interplay between the two finishes creates a visual dialogue that is endlessly compelling and changes with every shift of light.
