Large engraving from the late 18th or early 19th century entitled "the departure of the sons of tipu sultan" depicting a historical episode: the surrender of the sons of tipu sultan (tippu saib), ruler of the kingdom of mysore in india, to the british authorities following the anglo-mysore wars.
the scene, richly composed in an oriental setting, shows the women of zenana bidding farewell to the princes, who are awaited by tipu sultan and his elephants. The delicate rendering of the faces, costumes, and architecture testifies to the quality of the engraving.
the subject was very popular in england at the end of the 18th century.
the following inscriptions appear: "to the right honourable henry dundas of his majesty's principal secretaries of state," "mather brown, pinxt historiacle painter to their royal highness of the duke and duchess of yark," and "f. Bartolozzi, ra, engraver to his majesty."
mather brown (1761–1831) was an american painter who made his career in england, primarily as a portraitist and painter of historical scenes.
francesco bartolozzi (1727–1815) was an italian-born engraver with a highly successful career; he was one of the co-founders of the royal academy in london and the society of engravers.
