This sophisticated pair of mid-century ceramic lidded jars represents a compelling mid-20th-century Japanese interpretation of classical European porcelain traditions. Produced for the export market, these canisters seamlessly synthesize a clean, structured cylindrical form with the ornate, highly tactile decorative arts tradition of Italian Capodimonte workshops.
The bodies are executed in a striking, high-gloss glaze of pale celadon—a subtle, desaturated chartreuse that functions as a versatile neutral in contemporary interiors. This colorway is cleanly framed by creamy white, slip-banded detailing at the rims and bases.
Each lid features an intricate, hand-molded porcelain finial depicting a dense cluster of multi-petal white blossoms, complete with delicate yellow stamens and pale green foliage. The undersides exhibit the traditional underglaze blue crowned "N" mark alongside the original, intact "Made in Japan" foil labels, providing definitive documentation of their mid-century provenance and manufacturing history.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. The high-gloss glaze retains its original clarity and brilliant depth. Notably, the fragile, three-dimensional porcelain petals and botanical elements remain exceptionally well-preserved, free of the structural chips or structural losses typical of this genre of molded ceramics. Light, age-appropriate shelf wear is present only on the unglazed foot rings.
Dimensions
Large Canister: 5" Diameter x approx. 6.5" H (to top of finial)
Small Canister: 4.5" Diameter x approx. 5.5" H (to top of finial)
