This is an elegant set of 4 directoire style cane back dining chairs. Directoire style emerged in France during the late 18th century as a transitional style between Louis XVI and Empire. Directoire style favors neoclassical architectural forms, minimal carving, and richly grained wood and veneer. These 4 dining chairs are unmarked, but likely made in Europe, possibly France, circa 1940s.
The chairs are carved from solid fruitwood with flared backs accented with backward curving scrolls flanking the top rail and natural woven caning. The black upholstered seats are supported by newer hand-tied springs and are accented with bronze nailhead trim. Carved rosettes are mounted on the seat corners above shapely turned and tapered legs.
The circa 1940s era chairs are in very good vintage condition. The chair frames are solid and well built. The seat webbing, springs, and upholstery are newer and very supportive and firm. Minor scuffs and scratches on the wood frames. Stains on the fabric, which can probably be cleaned if desired. Or the seats can be reupholstered for a new look. Caning is great shape and mostly intact except for a few broken strands. Please see photos for more details about the condition of the chairs. Zoom in for more detail.
Each chair measures 34” tall, 18” wide, and 20” deep with a 19.5” seat height.
