Located at the western end of the Nieuwestad, the gate served for centuries as an important entrance to the provincial capital before being demolished during the modernization of the city in the early nineteenth century. The composition presents a picturesque view of the gate and its surroundings, combining architectural accuracy with the charm of everyday Dutch life. The Vrouwenpoort is shown spanning a waterway crossed by a small bridge, while its distinctive towers rise above the entrance. A traditional Dutch windmill stands in the background, and fishermen occupy the foreground, creating a peaceful scene that reflects the close relationship between the city and its waterways. This view originates from the work of the celebrated Frisian artist Jan Bulthuis (1750–1801), one of the most important Dutch topographical draftsmen of the late eighteenth century. Bulthuis became renowned for his detailed drawings of Dutch towns, villages, waterways, and landscapes, many of which were later engraved or reproduced by leading printmakers including Carel Frederik Bendorp. His works preserve numerous historic buildings and urban scenes that have since disappeared. The Vrouwenpoort itself was one of Leeuwarden's most recognizable landmarks. Built as part of the city's defensive system, it guarded access to the town while also serving as an architectural symbol of civic pride and prosperity. Following the decline of traditional fortifications and the expansion of urban traffic, the gate was demolished in the 1830s, making surviving images such as this an important visual record of old Leeuwarden. The print combines historical significance with strong decorative appeal. Its balanced composition, architectural detail, and evocative atmosphere make it particularly attractive to collectors of Dutch topography, Frisian history, and urban views.
