Montfaucon’s monumental encyclopedic survey of classical antiquities became one of the foundational works of archaeology and art history, documenting ancient Roman and Greek sculpture, decorative arts, domestic objects, ceremonial utensils, and mythological imagery from important European collections. The engraving presents a fascinating collection of classical antiquities including hand mirrors, ceremonial vessels, bowls, cosmetic containers, and decorative objects adorned with mythological ornament. Particularly striking is the richly engraved circular mirror or shield at center, depicting an elaborate classical procession with chariots, figures, animals, and mythological scenes rendered in exceptional detail. The upper section includes sculptural heads and ornamental bronze objects, while the lower section illustrates finely engraved domestic utensils and ancient vessels used in Roman daily life. Executed through delicate copperplate engraving, the composition combines scholarly precision with strong decorative appeal. The refined linear shading and carefully balanced arrangement reflect the eighteenth-century fascination with the rediscovery of antiquity and the rise of neoclassicism throughout Europe. Such engravings were highly valued by collectors, architects, artists, and Grand Tour travelers seeking inspiration from the elegance of the ancient world. Today the engraving displays beautifully as both an antiquarian study and a decorative artwork. Its monochromatic palette and refined classical imagery make it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, offices, and interiors inspired by classical or neoclassical design. It pairs exceptionally well with dark walnut, museum black, or lightly gilt frames combined with wide ivory or parchment-toned mats. This is an original eighteenth-century copperplate engraving printed in London in 1721, not a modern reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The engraving is sold unframed; any framed images shown are for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Condition: Good overall condition with age-related toning, scattered foxing, and minor edge wear consistent with age. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: Displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, ebonized, or museum black frames with a generous warm ivory mat to emphasize the intricate engraved detail and sculptural classical imagery.
