A charming pair of mid-century American wall sconces in the manner of Paavo Tynell, manufactured by Jay Lite Mfg Co. of Brooklyn, New York, circa 1948–1962. The sconces combine the signature pierced-star brass demilune shade and cascading "spray" of crystal drops that defined Tynell's celebrated Lightolier collaborations of the 1950s, executed here by a smaller American manufacturer working in the Tynell vocabulary.
When lit, the star piercings cast a constellation of light onto the surrounding wall — a quintessential atomic-age effect that established this design language in postwar American interiors. The cascading crystal drops on arching metal stems suggest a fountain or willow spray, adding kinetic visual interest to the composition.
Both sconces carry the original yellow UL Inspected label and union electrical workers stamp on the reverse. The "Brooklyn 38, N.Y." postal zone designation predates ZIP codes, dating production to before 1963. Both pieces are fully wired and in working condition. All crystal drops are present and intact across both sconces. The brass retains its original warm patina with light age-appropriate wear consistent with well-cared-for vintage fixtures.
A genuine pair like this — both functional, both intact, both marked — is increasingly difficult to find in this Tynell-style vocabulary at sub-museum prices. Perfect for flanking a mantel, mirror, console, or piece of art.
