An extraordinary and highly unusual hand-painted dragon panel, in the style of Tibetan folk art, executed on what appears to be a reclaimed military artillery or ammunition crate board bearing chalk markings dated “1972” on the reverse.
The front features a dynamic Asian dragon rendered in vivid colors against a black ground, surrounded by traditional cloud motifs. Hundreds of individually raised relief scales create remarkable texture and depth, giving the creature an almost sculptural presence. The dragon’s flowing form, vibrant palette, and dimensional surface reflect traditional East Asian artistic influences associated with strength, prosperity, wisdom, and protection.
Equally fascinating is the reverse side, which retains evidence of its former life. Faded markings, mounting holes, and remnants of military-style crate construction suggest the panel may have originated from a repurposed ammunition or artillery crate dating to 1972. Whether created as a folk-art project, decorative architectural element, or military-era souvenir, the piece carries a compelling blend of history, craftsmanship, and mystery.
The combination of military-industrial material and traditional dragon imagery creates a one-of-a-kind conversation piece equally suited to eclectic interiors, Asian-inspired décor, military collections, folk art collections, or gallery-wall displays.
