Chinese finely carved black hongmu of Liu Hai, one of The Eight Immortals, very skillfully detailed two-piece figurine depicting the laughing Liu Hai with a with a string of square-holed cash coins and a mythical three-legged chánchú (toad; toad in the moon, or jīnchán (金蟾) "Money Toad", Liu Haichan is considered an embodiment of Caishen, "God of Wealth"). The eyes of both figures are inlaid with glass, and Liu Hai's teeth are also inlaid. The lower part consists of a relief carved stand. Circa late 19th century, no later than early 20th.
