There is a distinct aura and physical presence to authentic, century-old craftsmanship that no mass-produced modern dresser can ever replicate. This striking Meiji-era (circa 1860s–1920s) Japanese Isho-Dansu (clothing chest) is a masterclass in wabi-sabi aesthetic. Depending on the ambient lighting in your space, the naturally aged wood grain shifts beautifully, revealing deep, mesmerizing layers of rich historic reds and shadowed blacks.
Beyond its visual appeal, this chest is a brilliant piece of historical engineering. Japanese Tansu chests were deliberately constructed to be surprisingly lightweight to allow for rapid mobility during the frequent fires of early Japan. To facilitate this swift movement, this specific piece features exceptionally pronounced, hand-forged iron Sao-toshi (pole-carrying) drop handles on its side panels. Historically, a thick wooden pole was slid through these exact iron loops so two people could quickly lift and carry the entire chest over their shoulders to safety.
Anchored by its original iron warabite bow handles and heavily riveted corner brackets, the drawer interiors remain beautifully clean and solid. It is a definitive, soulful statement piece perfectly suited for modern minimalist, Japandi, or eclectic luxury spaces. Ideal as a commanding entryway console, bedroom dresser, or media cabinet.

Features gorgeous wabi-sabi character and minor wear consistent with a 100+ year-old antique. Please note minor historical edge-loss on the rear vertical frame (see final photo), typical of Meiji-era pieces and completely hidden when staged against a wall. Structurally rock-solid with no dry rot. The drawer interiors are remarkably clean, and all drawers function smoothly. less
