Lovely Art Deco (7) piece celluloid vanity set of grooming implements, commonly referred to in the French vernacular as a "Necessaaire" set. The ensemble is of American manufacture circa 1930 and is completely all original and in very good condition with no repairs or restoration of any kind.
The preening items include:
1) Extra long hand held mirror with black ink design of floral and avian subject matter in white bone looking celluloid backdrop. The mirror is perfectly clear with no pitting and has a slight bevel around the entire perimeter; amber detail. 14 1/2" long
2) Full size hair brush with similar decor to the top side and amber underside. Bristles are firm and ready for use. 10" long
3) Lovely large amber and bone colored hair comb; the celluloid decor in perfect condition and with all of the teeth intact except for one (see image). Hair comb is 7 3/4" long.
4) Sturdy shoe horn to handle slipping one's foot into a tough to get on shoe; similarly decorated as items above. 7" long
5) Button hole loop to pull the button through the hole provided on the garment; some wear to the metal; amber and celluloid completely intact. 7" long
6) Completely "operable" small scissors with the same and similar design; the metal slightly worn, while the amber and celluloid lovely---they work fine. Maker's mark photographed. 5 1/4" long
7) "What Not" box resting on four amber feet with removable lidded top; to place small items like lip stick, cuff links, eye shadow rings, collar bones any daily utilitarian "tidy up" items.(what not). There is an identifying mark on the underneath that I have photographed that states the maker. 5 1/4" long x 4 3/8" wide x 2 1/4" high
"Necessaire" sets come with different implements and grooming items to fit customers needs who ordered the specific articles they wanted for their vanity. The top surfaces of this set consist of a black ink like floral and wreath with birds in flight decoration, the style referenced as "pearlized"; while the underside is a deep rich amber color. It very closely resembles bakelite in appearance and there are no mold marks; A pretty set, this necessaire is waiting to be enjoyed and to dress up the top to a chest of drawers, washstand, table top, or bathroom vanity counter top. A mark under some of the articles (see images) indicates "Amerith" company and "Hamilton Line" with a logo that looks like the arches at Washington Square in downtown NYC. Made by The Amerith company, formerly located at 10 East 40th Street New York City; they were incorporated on August 16th 1929. They were also identified as the "Celluloid Corporation" which was founded in 1868 by John Wesley Hyatt (the inventor of celluloid); the company later located New Jersey.
