Culled from a high quality collection of silver plate with the best and most unique pieces selected for this top of the line seven piece English tea service; this antique ensemble, while mainly late Victorian to Edwardian, it spans different makers and eras, but all pieces bear significant commonalities and attributes; being of Old Sheffield Plate and electroplated nickel steel (E.P.N.S.); and Georgian style gadrooning with aesthetically fine quality. Sheffield plate references an earlier process of applying silver plate over copper versus nickel; a method of silver plating indigenous to the early to mid 19th century silver makers of Sheffield, England; of note you should be able to see a remnant of copper bleeding through the surface. Wooden and later phenolic handles were used to repel the heat in pouring and handling.
All pieces are completely original with no restoration, and original patina with no enhancement to the surfaces or re-plate.
The pieces consist of:
teapot
coffee pot
extra beverage pot
sauce bowl
sugar and creamer
large size 22 3/4" x 13 1/4 " tray
1) Late Victorian Silver Plated Teapot by Iconic Sheffield maker "Folgate" Silverplating Manufacturing (marked on the underneath) with their iconic "fence and gate" logo.
8 3/4" high x 10"
2) Late Victorian Silver Plated Coffee Pot 8 3/4" high x 8 1/2" wide
Reeded and fluted design to bottom half of the pot; design characteristic of Georgian ware but this is late Victorian by Sheffield, England maker Charles Westwood and Sons Manufacturers (marked on the underneath); circa 1882 to 1887 marked "EPNS" to connote "electroplated nickel steel". Original ebonized wood handle and top to repel the heat when pouring and handling.
3) Early 20thC Georgian Style Beverage Serving Pot
7" high x 8" wide
The use of a third pot to introduce an additional beverage would have been a luxury indeed and used for hot chocolate or bouillon or perhaps a different blend of tea. This pot has a similar style repousse Georgian gadrooning design to it as the other pieces, and is again, Sheffield Plate and made circa 1910. The hinged lid with fine repousse detailing and a darkwood top matching the handlewere intended to deter the heat to make it more comfortable to pour and handle. The markings on the underneath indicate made by Roberts and Dore in Sheffield.
4) Early 19th Century Regency Serving Piece "Sauce" Vesselk; it is 7" high & 6" in diameter (top); probably used at tea for serving heavy whipped cream with a scone perhaps; could have also been utilized to serve bouillon. This is a fine quality piece portraying the head of a lion to each side with the circular handles in its mouth ; Georgian gadrooning design to the removable lid which has provision (hole) for a spoon or ladle (not included). The same design is applied to the bottom of the vessel, ending in a turned tubular design. All of this rests on a pedestal nicely detailed in repousse; there are 4 paw feet to the base flanked by wings; embossed with "England" and the makers logo on the underneath.
5) and 6) A matching Pair of a Sugar and a Creamer; with fluted and ribbed Georgian gardooning decoration. Each one is 3" high (sugar 6" wide; creamer 4 3/4" wide. The sugar has a scalloped design with the end handles, while the creamer has a single handle with a spout for pouring.
The tray is appropriately large (22 3/4" x 13 1/4") to accommodate the six silver plate pieces. It is unmarked albeit, lovely and well made, likely mid Victorian due to OIld Sheffield like silver plate over copper base. The decoration consists of ornate embossed borders, floral patterns, with scrollwork handles.
There are no repairs, no dents, no re-plating, and zero restoration to any of the pieces; and, all in all, this is a lovely presentation representing the best in silver plate and excellent value.
