Olivier Pettit (1918–1979) was a French sculptor and ceramicist who developed two lines of ceramics throughout his life: one in glazed clay decorated freehand with motifs of animals, flowers, and bullfighting, and the other in stoneware, with or without motifs.
This vase, with its spherical body and long, slightly flared neck, is thrown in clay and covered with a nuanced brown-cream glaze, speckled with pale yellow and golden beige tones, characteristic of Pettit's palette. The decoration, drawn freehand by incision in the glaze, depicts a large, fantastical bird on the body—radiating crest, white-rimmed eye, body composed of scale-like feathers—rendered in flat areas of reddish-brown and gray-green, outlined with a dark line.
Other motifs complete the composition: a second bird in flight, a stylized sun, and what appears to be a basket or a schematic plant motif. Pettit signs his works by hand with his initials: a "P" vertically passing through an "O"—a monogram visible under the base, surrounded by a reddish-brown ring.
Very good condition. Height: 13.8 cm.
