Organic studio ceramic trio – ingeborg zenker & gerburg karthausen, germany, 1970s–1980s
a remarkable trio of studio ceramic works combining vessel, sculpture, and functional object. The rich olive-green volcanic glaze and organically modelled forms create a harmonious composition of texture, shadow, and sculptural rhythm.
dimensions:
tall vase:
h 25.5 cm, w 13 cm, d 10 cm
biomorphic vase:
h 11 cm, w 13 cm, d 10 cm
sculptural object / candleholder:
h 13.5 cm, w 19 cm, d 15.5 cm
material: studio ceramics
brand: studio ceramics
designer: ingeborg zenker & gerburg karthausen
color: olive green, brown, ivory
era: 1970s–1980s
origin: germany
condition: excellent vintage condition; no chips, cracks, or restorations. Minor firing characteristics inherent to handmade studio ceramics.
remarks: set of three. Includes one sculptural vase, one biomorphic vase, and one sculptural object/candleholder.
the tallest vessel introduces a dramatic vertical element through its bifurcated opening and contrasting ivory interior, while the smaller vase offers softer, rounded contours. The sculptural object expands the composition through open space and movement, creating a dynamic interaction between solid mass and void.
displayed together, the three works function almost as a small ceramic installation. Their earthy palette and organic forms make them especially effective on natural wood, stone, or textured plaster surfaces, where the nuanced glaze and hand-built character can be fully appreciated. A compelling ensemble for collectors of german studio pottery, organic modern design, and twentieth-century ceramic art. This piece has an attribution mark,
