Sergio Bustamante style Mexican folk art brass & ceramic fish sculpture, 1970s. Fantastic vintage condition. No damage, scratches, or cracks. The integrated pottery sits on a sea shell base which provides a sturdier display profile and protects the lower cerami fins from chipping and not common, which elevates the value. Most are flat bottomed standalone variants.

This sculpture was made in Tonalá, a town in the state of Jalisco, western Mexico.

This specific style of combining burnished or glazed ceramics with armored brass scales was heavily popularized in the mid-to-late 20th century by prominent local workshops, drawing heavy stylistic inspiration from renowned artist Sergio Bustamante, who established his workshop in Jalisco.

There is no maker's mark on it, many pieces from these Tonala workshops were originally shipped with simple foil or paper stickers reading "Hecho en México" or designating the workshop name. Over several decades, these temporary labels easily peel off or wash away during cleaning.
