Ming dynasty style, possibly Ming dynasty (1368–1644) or later
An evocative Chinese green lead-glazed earthenware funerary model (mingqi) of a covered travelling carriage, the enclosed cab surmounted by a domed canopy roof applied with bosses and set between two large radiating spoked wheels, drawn by a pair of sturdy ponies with lowered heads and moulded harness, a seated driver at the front and an attendant figure beside the cab, the whole raised on an integral rectangular base. The model is covered overall in a rich apple- and olive-green lead glaze that pools to a deep emerald in the recesses, the surface now showing areas of degradation, flaking and pale earthen encrustation of the kind associated with prolonged burial. Models of carts and carriages of this type were placed in tombs to provide transport for the deceased in the afterlife, a tradition reaching back to the Han dynasty and revived with charm in the glazed mingqi of the Ming period. The base is unglazed buff earthenware with characteristic glaze drips at the edges and no marks, as expected. Offered as Ming dynasty style without scientific testing; thermoluminescence analysis can be arranged upon request.
