An attractive famille rose ovoid ginger jar and cover, the well-rounded body enamelled with two large quatrefoil panels reserved on a rich lemon-yellow ground. Each panel is finely painted with luxuriant pink peony blossoms issuing from leafy stems beside a flowering prunus branch, attended by fluttering butterflies, all against a soft white ground within iron-red panel borders. The surrounding yellow ground is densely worked with scrolling lotus and composite floral sprays in shades of rose-pink, turquoise, aubergine and green, interrupted at the shoulder by a band of turquoise-ground ruyi-head lappets. The slightly domed cover continues the yellow-ground floral scrollwork around a bud-form finial picked out in iron red. The recessed base bears a six-character apocryphal seal mark in iron red reading Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi (大清乾隆年製, ‘Made in the Qianlong reign of the Great Qing’), applied in homage to the celebrated eighteenth-century reign rather than as a statement of date, a convention widespread on Jingdezhen wares of the Republic period and later.
