A decorative pair of Chinese famille rose vases of slender ovoid form, each rising to a tall waisted neck with gently everted gilt rim. The bodies are brightly enamelled with long-tailed pheasants perched amid blossoming peony, prunus and flowering shrubs issuing from blue-shaded rockwork, with butterflies and small birds in flight above; the shoulders with a finely stippled cell-pattern band, the neck with further flowering branches between underglaze blue ruyi-head and scroll borders picked out in yellow and iron red, and a band of yellow-ground archaistic lappets above the foot. The white-glazed bases bear iron-red four-character seal marks reading 乾隆年製 (Qianlong nian zhi, “Made in the Qianlong period”) — an apocryphal commemorative mark used at Jingdezhen throughout the twentieth century. Cheerful, well-painted examples of post-war Jingdezhen export production in the classic “bird and flower” taste, of pleasing scale for an interior or mantelpiece. Sold as a pair.
