Tongzhi six-character seal mark and probably of the period (1862–1874)
A vibrant Chinese famille rose baluster vase, the ovoid body rising to a waisted trumpet neck with lobed, everted rim, applied at the shoulder with a pair of turquoise-glazed Buddhist lion handles with gilt ring details. The body is finely enamelled with continuous figural scenes in the Canton taste: to one side a lively outdoor procession of dignitaries and attendants among blue-green rockwork, and to the reverse an interior court scene with seated officials, ladies and servants among furnishings, all rendered in rose-pink, turquoise, aubergine, green and iron red. The neck carries further figural vignettes between bands of floral meander, ruyi-head lappets and diaper, the lower body ringed by a stiff-leaf border. The recessed base bears a six-character seal mark in iron red reading Da Qing Tongzhi Nian Zhi (大清同治年製, ‘Made in the Tongzhi reign of the Great Qing’), and both palette and drawing are entirely consistent with production of that reign. Vases of this type epitomise the colourful, narrative style favoured in the later nineteenth century and remain perennially popular as decorative statements.
