An elegant and understated bottle vase of tianqiuping inspiration, the globular body rising to a tall slender cylindrical neck, the fine white glaze serving as ground for a softly washed grisaille landscape in the ink-painting manner: a broad misty river scene with low banks, sparse reeds and a solitary skiff, rendered in pale sepia tones that wrap quietly around the lower body. The shoulder bears a two-line poetic inscription in running script, evoking rain clearing over the river, ripening rice fields and figures returning home at dusk, framed by small iron-red collector-style seals. The mouth, upper neck and shoulder are trimmed with unusually delicate pencilled bands of pendent lappets, trellis diaper and ruyi-heads in grisaille. The recessed base carries a square iron-red seal mark reading Zhongguo Jingdezhen Zhi (中國景德鎮製, "Made in Jingdezhen, China"), placing the piece in the post-1949 period, when the Jingdezhen studios produced literati-style wares of notably fine quality. A serene, painterly object whose restraint sets it apart from more heavily decorated export wares.
