West Germany, third quarter 20th century
A tall and elegant floor vase of slender baluster form with a gracefully flared trumpet neck, produced by the noted German manufactory Kaiser Porzellan in its celebrated ‘Nanking’ pattern, conceived in the Chinese famille-rose taste. The fine white porcelain body is decorated in soft polychrome enamels with a resplendent phoenix (fenghuang) in tones of gold, orange and blue, perched upon pierced cobalt-blue rockwork and surrounded by flowering prunus branches, peonies, and scattered blossoms in lavender, coral and green that rise gracefully over the shoulder and neck. The base bears the printed crowned ‘AK’ monogram above KAISER W. GERMANY and the script pattern name ‘Nanking’, together with painter’s numeral 18, dating the piece to before German reunification. While conceived in homage to Chinese export porcelain, this is a continental European work, offered here as an honest and decorative chinoiserie object of impressive scale, well suited to an entrance hall or salon.
