Late Qing dynasty (1644–1912), Guangxu period, circa 1880–1910
A handsome Chinese blue and white baluster jar and cover of classic temple-jar form, the high-shouldered ovoid body rising from a slightly spreading foot to a short waisted neck, surmounted by a domed cover with everted rim and bud-form finial. The body is densely painted in vivid tones of underglaze cobalt blue with a continuous design of leafy scrolling vines bearing trefoil leaves and tendrils, centred upon large stylised lotus blossoms, the whole evoking the celebrated "tobacco leaf and vine" patterns popular in the late nineteenth century. The shoulder carries a border of pendent ruyi-head lappets enclosing floral sprigs, while the foot is encircled by a band of alternating vertical panels and stiff leaves; the neck bears a further frieze of foliate scroll. The cover is similarly decorated en suite with scrolling foliage radiating from a central chrysanthemum bloom. The reverse of the design displays the lively, freely drawn brushwork characteristic of Jingdezhen export wares of the Guangxu era, the cobalt pooling attractively to a deep sapphire in places against a softly glazed ivory ground. A decorative and well-proportioned example of the type, ideally suited to display singly or as part of a garniture.
