Meiji period (1868–1912), late 19th century
A handsome Japanese Imari jar and cover of generous baluster form, the body moulded with vertical ribbing and decorated in the classic Imari palette of underglaze blue, iron-red and gilt. The ovoid body is divided into alternating vertical bands — deep cobalt panels of diaper and cell pattern contrasting with iron-red panels of dense karakusa scrolling foliage — framing a large oval reserve painted with a ho-o bird (the Japanese phoenix) in flight amid swirling feather-scrolls in iron-red and gold, above broad paulownia and maple leaves washed in blue and soft ochre. A second shaped reserve below depicts birds among bamboo and flowering plants in a fenced garden. The high domed cover continues the banded decoration with a further ho-o roundel and is surmounted by a moulded mushroom-form finial in iron-red and gilt. The foot is encircled by a band of blue diaper and scrollwork. A characteristic and decorative example of the Arita export wares of the Meiji period, of impressive size and strong colour.
