Chinese export, second half 20th century
A charming ornamental egg of generous proportion, decorated in the Satsuma taste on a warm cream crackled ground. The body is finely painted in polychrome enamels with a continuous garden scene: elegantly robed court ladies conversing beneath flowering prunus and bamboo, attended by a child, with peony and chrysanthemum sprays issuing from blue-washed rockwork and distant hills beyond. The shoulder is capped by a deep cobalt-blue collar reserved with phoenixes in flight among stylised foliage and iron-red blossoms, set off from the principal register by a gilt line border. The figures are rendered with delicate facial detailing and patterned textiles in the manner of Meiji-period Satsuma wares, a style enthusiastically revived for the export market in the twentieth century. Decorative eggs of this type were produced as cabinet ornaments and remain popular accents for the interior. An attractive and well-preserved example of the genre, pleasing in hand and ideally suited to display on a stand.
