Qing dynasty, Guangxu period (1875–1908), late 19th century
A characterful baluster vase of the celebrated “Nanking” crackleware type, the ovoid body rising from a spreading foot to a waisted trumpet neck, the rim fitted with a pierced bronze gallery collar cast with swag and roundel motifs — a period mount of the kind applied for the European market. The warm ivory ground, suffused overall with an even network of fine crackle, is painted in the famille rose palette with a lively battle scene: mounted warriors and standard-bearers clashing amid blue-green rockwork beneath fluttering pennants, the engagement continuing in a secondary register at the neck. The shoulder and lower neck are encircled by moulded café-au-lait bands worked in relief with foliate scrolls in imitation of bronze, while the foot is collared by a band of polychrome lappets in pink and turquoise. The recessed base bears a four-character seal mark in archaic seal script reading Chenghua Nian Zhi (成化年製, “Made in the Chenghua period”), apocryphal as is customary on wares of this class, which were produced at Jingdezhen and exported in quantity through the port of Nanking in the closing decades of the nineteenth century.
