Stately pair of watercolors by David Mode Payne (American, 1907-1985). The scene depicted is an interior of an opulent room, with finely crafted furniture and paintings hanging on a wall with blue patterned wallpaper. The scene continues across the pair, creating a panorama. These pieces are an early preview of what Payne would become known for - interior scenes of the homes of wealthy families.
Unsigned, but acquired with other signed work by David Payne, directly from his family's estate.
Presented in giltwood frames with blue mats.

David has a cult following of his drawings of the wealthy and beautiful interiors they inhabit. David Mode Payne (American, 1907-1985) was known primarily for his detailed interior scenes of elaborate homes, primarily those of wealthy Rhode Island and New York residents. His scenes were featured prominently in Architectural Digest and House & Garden in the 1980s. Payne attended the Art School of Fine and Applied Arts in New York City, as well as served in the US Army Air Corps, achieving First Lieutenant in 1944. He has his first solo show in 1932 at William Woods College in Fulton Missouri. In 1946, Payne spent a few months painting in Mexico and had a show of his work upon return at Eleanor Smith Galleries in St. Louis Missouri.
